I WILL PERSONALLY SHOVE A TTTYG VINYL DOWN YOUR THROAT.
Glad we’ve got that settled.
Hello! Of course i remember, and i’m sooo happy the advice helped! OneRepublic throws an amazing holiday concert, i’m so happy you enjoyed it! :)
In terms of music business jobs, there are literally thousands of different ways you can be involved! What i recommend is to sit down and think about what part of a concert/what “music business” related things make YOU happy. What makes you tick?!?! What made you get interested in working in the music business in the first place??! Finding out what makes a crazy day of work all worth it to you is a great way to begin to narrow down what you’d like to do. Some people prefer the behind the scenes work, like: booking bands to play venues, organizing the shows and all the little things that make them happen, helping artists in the studio, working as business managers, entertainment lawyers, or maybe you like “discovering acts” and signing bands to labels. Other people get there fix from being more directly involved in the action, and those jobs can be: tour managers, general managers, merch people, venue managers/stage managers, sound/lighting engineers, a concert promoter or someone who works on major tours, and much much more.
There are TONS of different jobs, but a great way to help figure out what you might enjoy is to start by realizing if you’re more happy doing those behind the scene things that make concerts and careers happen, or if you prefer more direct contact with the musicians themselves. Once you figure that out, you can begin to figure out what jobs you’ll like the best, and start trying them out!
I thought that i’d love certain jobs, and after trying them out or talking with people that do them i’ve began to realize that some things don’t make me as happy as others. That’s the most important thing, because no matter how much money you make or how famous your act is, if you don’t find joy in what you do every day, then it’s all for nothing.
In terms of real world experience, I got started by going out on a limb and approaching a band in person, as well as searching for emails online (or Tumblr accounts like mine!) and just asking questions and trying to get involved. Once you figure out what kind of things you’d like to do, start researching bands that you like and find out who their team members are that do that job, and then if you can contact them, see if you can ask questions. Another great resource is finding a local band you like, and going to one of their shows and telling them you’d like to intern/help them if they need it. The local music scene here in Denver is unlike any other across the US - and it is rich with talented and kind people, up and coming acts, as well as a slew of different management companies, worldwide Promoters, and some of the most recognized radio stations and music venues in the world. Denver is a PERFECT city to live in if you want to learn and want to get involved in music, so feel lucky, and be sure to take advantage of it!!! Some bands have a system already in place, so don’t be upset if they tell you that they don’t need extra help, but many beginner bands might even just need extra hands to move things around or help them sell merchandise at shows, and some will surely say yes!
About school, i’ve heard some pretty cool things about Johnson and Whales’ program. I currently go to the University of Colorado Denver and can’t say enough about how happy i am with their Music Business program, although it is VERY specific to the music world, and i’d assume J&W’s program is more basic and generic - which isn’t bad! Although i’m personally studying to get a Music Business degree, just know that having such a specific degree isn’t going to really help or hurt your chances of working with music. Tons of people working in the music industry today have degrees in completely unrelated topics! (some don’t even have degrees! *gasp!*) It’s up to you to get the real world experience and learn the things you need to learn to be successful. Sometimes these schools will teach you the basics, but what i’ve noticed is that nothing i’ve learned in school has made sense until i’ve put it in perspective by seeing it/doing it in real life. So if you are interested in studying other things that aren’t so business/music focused, don’t be afraid to! You can always supplement your major with a minor in business, or by taking lots of elective business and entrepreneurship courses while interning with bands or venues. Those classes can help lay down the business basics you’ll need to understand any business or company, but your internships and real life experiences will help you almost more than any degree will. The music business is very unique and specific, and no other industry works quite the same, so it’s important to get your hands dirty and learn about music by working in music, that way you don’t have to re-learn things you thought you already knew about something else.
I hope all of this helps! I live in Denver and quite literally go to concerts weekly. if you’re ever going to a show, ask me on here if i’m going and maybe we can meet up and chat! I’m glad to keep answering any questions you have! :) Good luck!
